Electric Picnic continued...

...time was against us for this year's event but it was an exciting brief and well suited to the light weight construction method used on the Hyder stand.

Well it's bank holiday Monday here, so the rain is just beginning to fall. I thought I'd get some thoughts down on paper in order to outline the various ideas I've arrived at over the weekend. We can then choose the strongest and most practicable of those to develop towards presentation stage.

We have 4 approaches fundamentally.

1. Simple imagery which relates to the subject matter i.e. low energy elements (coils and filaments). The use of red and green lighting, go stop etc.

2. Abstracted imagery which relates to the above i.e. more arty and less specific.

3. Thematic i.e. The green route, electric avenue, the bridge etc..

4. A strong thematic idea which uses visually iconic imagery to deliver your message. talking about our generation (there's a strap--line for you) The green revolution

The 4th approach could include 'electric avenue' but the songs lyrics evoke the wrong kind of sentiment in my view ...we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue and then we'll take it higher ...We want to take it lower. This theme could also include the elements (no pun intended) mentioned in 1, above. They could be stylistically integrated.

I'm leaning towards the 4th approach because a recognizable theme is memorable. The who theme relates directly to the event and to you, being in the generation business . It also has a strong message for change. Apart from the above, it also worries me that it would be a one off. The elements used in the structure may not be re-usable for say, a roadshow... which leads me to what I think is practicable, re-usable and sustainable...

I think we can combine 3 elements...

1. Structure - The bridge idea is good both symbolically and practically. It can be used again in areas like shopping centres seminars and exhibitions.

2. Action - People walking over the bridge could then sign an energy pledge to consume less by turning off lighting, not keeping electronic equipment on standby etc. They could be presented with a badge or certificate to mark their commitment. The event at the Electric Picnic may offer an element of competition i.e. The fastest person to cross the bridge and sign the pledge wins a prize... maybe 6 months free lecky. Mind you, that may encourage over use of the prize... Maybe 2 free tickets to the next Electric Picnic.

3. Message - At the event, the message is created via the related imagery but the re-use of part or all of the structure may replace The thematic imagery with Type... power to the people... The Green Revolution... Turning Ireland even greener... talking about our generation.

I like to throw everything into the pot then whittle away the ideas with less milage but I suspect you're beginning to wonder how this will all synthesize into a single finished idea...

The Who theme...Talking about our generation Doesn't necessarily have to use the actual imagery but... targets, The male symbol and the way the graphics are used could be 'borrowed'. Words aren't copyright so... 'Who are we' and 'Talking about our generation' could be alluding to the theme. The images at the back of the stage above, are reminiscent of traffic signals so a Pastiche of all this could work very well and would be recognised by the generation who are likely to be at the Electric Picnic.

Actually, as I'm working through this I'm getting very excited about the who theme...

The next stage will be presentation... Until a theme is established, there's no point spending time on 3D visuals so that will be the next step. I'll visualize the structure and how graphics could be applied. Part of the structure will be in the form of the twisted, long life bulbs and the old style filament. The structure beneath the constructions I designed for the Hyder stand is tubular steel. I think the making of these bulb forms in tubular steel will look fantastic. We could also make material shapes of bulbs behind them and illuminate them or, even better... a bulb shaped tunnel that covers the bridge. I think the installation could be very dramatic by day but really come into it's own at night with fabulous lighting.

Having looked at the other offers on show at the event, we really need to make our mark and whatever our imagery and message, we need to apply it to a dramatic and sculptural structure...

Speak soon once you've absorbed this...
